Review: The Natural History of Hidden Animals by Bernard Heuvelmans
This posthumously published collection of Heuvelmans’s ISC journal articles shows how the "Father of Cryptozoology" understood his field: as archival and ethnographic detective work more than fieldwork.
The Natural History of Hidden Animals gathers several of Bernard Heuvelmans’s articles from the journal Cryptozoology, and offers a clear view of how the “Father of Cryptozoology” conceived of the discipline. For Heuvelmans, cryptozoology was primarily archival and ethnographic research: the investigator deduced the real animal behind a piece of folklore through “scientific intuition” rather than going into the field.
